Hello guys! I hope you had a great weekend. I am happy to share my very first Dowry ceremony event. I’ve covered an introduction in the past but this was a little different. The dowry ceremony is big must in the Igbo culture. I definitely enjoyed covering this event. I’ve known Ogechi for a while and she has also been in a few weddings I shot in the past. I am always excited when familiar faces reach out to me. With Ogechi’s help I got a breakdown of the Dowry process.
After the girl’s father has done research on the groom’s family and accepted the groom-to-be’s intentions the dowry (bride price) must be negotiated. But first, the bride-to-be must find her love among the crowd of close family and friends. When she finds him, she kneels before him, offers him palm wine which he drinks. Once he drinks the palm wine, the girl’s father blesses the union. The Dowry amount will then be negotiated by the men in both families. Dowry is an amount of money and goods that the girl’s kindred will receive from the groom’s family in exchange for the bride-to-be’s hand in marriage. Many families only exchange the dowry symbolically as no actual price can be paid – of course igbo women are priceless. Once the dowry has been exchanged, the couple, under igbo culture, is now technically married.
Check out some images from the day. Enjoy!

Hello friends (and blog stalkers lol..i kid..i kid). One cool thing about being a photographer is you get to take pictures of not only clients you’ve never met before but of friends and family. Dotun is family and i could not be happier to be his photographer. When he got engaged he was pretty sure he wanted to use me and honestly i figured if i did not shoot the wedding i would be a guest and its a Win-Win regardless. I still plan on having fun but will just have to do that while taking pictures :). This e-session was super fun. Dotun is a big time Frat (Kappa) and Oyin is a repping Soror (Delta) so we incorporated that element into the shoot. They both love going to the movies so we hit up the Plaza Theatre (Oldest in Atlanta!). We rounded up with a sophisticated look at the Fernbank Museum. Saying it was fun would be a huge understatement. I can’t wait for the big day. Congrats Dotun & Oyin on your engagement!! Check out the story on how they met and the proposal story. Enjoy!
How they met! (Interview by Mide Events)
How did you meet?
Dotun: LOL, well you know me, a young, suave, and handsome brother with a lot of personality. I just drew her in. She was mine the moment I gave her that sexy stare, from a distance, with a little ” LL cool J lip-licking action.”
Oyin: Umm Excuse me please. Ok? Let me answer this one because you know guys tend to mix it all up. Chai! Dotun and I have actually grown together from our adolescent years and attended college together as well. However, our first encounter started in summer of 2003 during an Eko Club Atlanta conference at the Hilton Hotel; I was 15, going into the 10th grade. I was on crutches from an injury I’d acquired while running track, dreading the fact that I had to be there. Then I saw this guy with a big shiny forehead walking towards me with his blue jean outfit on and flashing all 32s. He came to me and sat next to me as if I had extended an invitation. He started making small talk and out of nowhere, says to me “I love you! Will you marry me?” LOL…just kidding….. but really he was sweating me though .
Dotun: Habaaa!! This girl!!! She knows how to sprinkle salt and pepper on a story man. Jesu!
Oyin: Anyways, he asked me if he could have my number and I replied, wide eyed “Ha! Nooooo my father will kill me- boys can’t call my house!” But being his clever self which is one of the things I still love about him today, he replied to me “Well what if I just call your house and let the phone ring one time and hang up, you will know it’s me and you can call me back. Just like that he convinced me and that’s how our system and ultimately, our love story started together.
The Proposal!
First let me just say Dotun knows me very well. He knows that I am analytical and I can sense when something is up. Therefore, he didn’t dare try to orchestrate something big with my friends and family because I would have simply ruined it with my inquisitive nature. Shame on me huh?? “Amebo” tinz….Anyways, so on a regular Friday he casually called me to meet him for lunch at the St. Regis hotel. We ate lunch and had a few drinks. Since we drove separate cars, we trailed each other as we talked and flirted on the phone on the way back to his place. Upon arrival at his home, we were having a conversation across the apartment, as I was in the kitchen and he was in his room. My back was turned. When he came into the kitchen, I simultaneously turned around to carry on our conversation and found him descending to his knees. Then I saw this NICE rock in his trembling hands as his eyes seemed to be piercing so deeply through me that I almost descended to my knees to keep from falling. But instead, I ran away jumping and screaming in excitement around the apartment! So to say the least, the proposal was highly unexpected, exceptionally spontaneous and blissfully private and I loved every moment of it. The more we grow as an engaged couple, the more I appreciate his sentimental method of proposal. I’m a lucky gal!

Hello There! Surprise proposals never get old. In fact I truly love being part of them. This surprise proposal was coordinated internationally! lol. Robin lives in the UK so planning for this surprise proposal was not exactly easy. Luckily, Robin had two future sister-in-laws to help him in making it all possible. They reached out to me and we got the ball rolling. The weather cooperated and the proposal was a success! Jenny was completely surprised. Congrats guys on your engagement. I wish you both the best!! Check out some images from the day. Enjoy!
